whats a good french horn to play at a relativley advanced level?

ive been playing for 8 years and my parents have finally agreed to buy me my own horn :D
I'm looking for one for around £4000 and with a detachable bell, because I'm going to be taking it to uni with me. preferably in yellow brass.

any ideas?
i will be using it in orchestra and windband

well 4K will buy you a slamming horn. Shop around and tryout a lot of different models. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. That said, K mart brand horns and the like will not play like a Paxman. Play ever horn you can get your hands on. Know what you want out of the horn though so you don't go off totally in the wrong direction and waste a lot of money. The horn itself:

1.The bell throat has a large impact on the sound. Larger bell throats have bigger usu darker sounds. Think huge hollywood sound. Smaller bell throats tend to have smaller, more perky sometimes brighter sounds. Large bells are typical of Kruspe horns, Conn 8D has the largest. Holton 179. Geyer wraps tend to have smaller bell throats. Generally a large sound is more suited to orchestra/band and a compact sound is better for solo work. Again play some horns and decide for yourself.
2. The leadpipe taper is another important thing that greatly affects the resistance. Personally I feel like Geyer wraps have a little less resistance, which I greatly like, but that is my opinion and you should form your own.
3. Material: Yellow, and rose brass are said to have a bit softer more mellow sound (rumor, I can't tell any difference, maybe you can?) however they are softer than nickel and will dent easier. Just something to consider. Play both nickel and brass horns esp. if the model you like is available in both.
4. Removable bell: don't worry about this. If it is fixed bell and you love the horn you can have it converted. Don't pass up a quality horn because of a fixed bell. On the other side, do you REALLY NEED a screw bell. If you dent (even minor) the screw ring it is oodles of $ to fix it. Fixed bell its pocket change to fix a minor dent. Also over time (many many years) the rings deteriorate and could need replacement, esp if the ring itself is brass as well.
5. Consider the wait time on a new custom horn, some more well know vendors have very long waiting lists (last I heard a new Paxman will cost you around 2 years) The upside to having a horn custom made is that you get exactly what you want.

Some points about all horns that you should consider:
intonation, attack, release, slurs, staccato, legato, volume extremes, control, high register, extreme low register. To really get to know a horn you have to play it for several days. Find somewhere/one that will let you play test it for a week or more. Most will let you have it longer if you just ask.

Brands to consider:
(probably the top 2 overall makers)
Paxman
Englerbert Schmid
(very good horns, but don't have a reputation)
Durk
Dieter Otto (be weary of the vavles, he doesn't make his own, GREAT, BEAUTIFUL horns, valves may need some tune up right off the bat)
Lewis
Alexander (very inconsistent, some suck, some are amazing)
Yamaha (custom model only)
Hans Hoyer

Some vendors:
any maker them self
POPE REPAIR!!!!! I just bought a horn from here. Nice guy, lets you playtest, oodles of used horns
Siegrieds Call (the guy is kinda aggressive, i play tested one and had some issues with a valve. he was nice until i started to sound like i didn't want the horn, however he lets you play test and has some great new horns)
hornsaplenty (great site with some great horns, I'm not sure if he let's you play test or not. He also has some useful info on selecting a horn)
hornplayer.net has some good classifieds but beware that you are dealing with individuals not companies. Make sure if you buy one from there the seller lets you play it.

Consider a used horn. It might not look good but it will play like a dream. Great horn for a great price. You can get a model that is out of your price range if you don't mind it looking a little ratty.

PLAY LOTS OF HORNS LOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Before you buy. This is not a quick process. Be patient and you will find the right one.
